Updated 11/20/18:  Assets of Your School District: A Review of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA)

Schools in Illinois are operating under a new federal law that relates to the quality of our services to and performance of our students called ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act).  This new law replaces the old NCLB (No Child Left Behind) Act.  The new law calls for 90% of our students to be successful on a number of school measures by the year 2032.  Schools will be individually rated according to our progress toward these goals.

The measures used to rate schools involves a complex formula that includes 75% Academic Indicators (Growth and Proficiency of student performance) and 25% Student Success and School Quality Indicators. Schools then receive one of four "tier designations:"  Exemplary, Commendable, Underperforming and Lowest Performing. The recent ratings received by our Salt Creek School District 48 schools, based on a number of school success measures, has all three of our schools rated as "Commendable." Our Commendable rating indicates that we do not have any significantly low performing student subgroups, but that we are not in the highest 10% of schools in the state, which would have earned us an "Exemplary" rating.  We will be working hard to attain that Exemplary rating by improving student performance.

However, we know that our students are much more than test scores, and that our schools provide many supports and services beyond academics.  I would like to share some of these remarkable assets of Salt Creek School District 48 with you:  School Board IASB Governance Award in 2015 & 2017, Swartz School US Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award in 2014, Right at School Before and After School Program, Breakfast Program Available for All Students, Strong Music and Art Programs, Numerous Clubs and Sports, 1:1 Technology for Students District Wide, New K-4 STEM Program, Strong Parent Support from FTC, Successful 2016 Referendum that Enables us to Repair our Schools, Strong Relationship with our High School District and Affiliated Elementary Districts, New Curriculum in ELA and Math, Strong Teacher Professional Development Program, Many Student Supports, Numerous School Safety Enhancements, Improved Website and Parent Communication App, Learning to Lead Student Leadership Training, Student and Staff Wellness Initiatives, Full Day Kindergarten and Consecutive Long term Contracts with SCEA.
