Our PIE Foundation (Partnership for Inspired Education) that supports educational opportunities in Districts 4, 45, 48, and 88 is excited to announce our 2018 Fundraiser.  On Sunday March 11, 2018, please join us at 2:00 that afternoon for a performance of "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" at Drury Lane in Oakbrook Terrace.  The performance will be followed by an auction and a dinner.  Tickets are $90 each, and may be purchased via the PIE website: www.piefoundation.org. Dear Parents, 
As you may know, we have recently switched from Powerschool to Skyward Qmaltiv for our Student System. This program is new and ever changing. As we work out the kinks, you will see some annoyances and conveniences. In the past we only had paper notices for low food service balances, but this system allows us to do this via e-mail. For students who eat with us, this is great. For those that do not, we understand it is very annoying to get a daily e-mail about a low balance when you opt out of the service. I am working directly with Skyward on this issue, and will likely open up Parent Access soon so that you can uncheck a box to opt out of these types of notifications. If you are a pre-k parent or a parent who does not use our meal service, please ignore these e-mails for now. I should be able to have a solution soon and appreciate your flexibility. If you are a paying parent and received a notice, please make sure to pay your balance. If you have any further questions, please call the main office.

We recently had our first Little Viking Pride Assembly at Stella May Swartz School. We will be having these assemblies twice a month throughout the year. In the past we have done different Reading and Learning Incentives to encourage learning outside of the school day. These programs were great, but have been losing steam. We know how busy everyone’s lives are outside of school and we are proud of the many activities and organizations our students are part of. We want to respect the time students have with their families and the time they already dedicate to their school work. 

 

Instead of our previous incentives, for this school year, we will be focusing on Little Viking Pride. This is a school-wide program to recognize our students’ hard work and positive attitudes everyday. This is going to improve our student culture and learning throughout our building and we use the assemblies as a way to publicly recognize our students for the great work they do. 

 

There are a few activities that will take place during these assembles. First, we will review any school-wide issues that need to be addressed as a group. Then we will draw Gold Slip winners. Every day students have the opportunity to earn Gold Slips from their teachers for doing positive things. We collect these up until the assembly and then draw winners for a variety of prizes. The more often a student receives Gold Slips, the more likely they are to win! The last thing we will do at each Little Viking Pride Assembly is to award 1-4 students per grade level with a Viking Pride Award. These students have been nominated by a staff member for their hard work and/or positive contribution to our school culture. They will get a letter home sharing this information, and receive a Little Viking Pride T-Shirt. 

 

We are so proud of our students and we hope they look forward to these assemblies and the recognition they receive throughout the year!

Effective Monday, March 13, 2017, any change to your student’s regular dismissal routine MUST be made before 2:30pm. If the school office is not notified of a change by 2:30pm that day, we are required to dismiss your child according to their normal routine. Your child’s safety is our number one concern, and last minute changes negatively impact this. Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

This was truly the most pride we have seen our students take in MAP Testing this session. The students took their time, asked questions, and were so proud of their results. The MAP Tests are given to show our teachers and administration how are students are learning. Teachers use this information to better plan and differentiate their instruction. In celebration of such a great job, both Salt Creek and Swartz hosted a MAP Finale Dance Party. Great job everyone!

We do go outside most days in the winter for recess. We follow a temperature and wind chill chart that the Illinois provides schools for this purpose. Please make sure to dress your son/daughter for outside play all winter long. We suggest snow pants and boots as well, so students can have full access to our playground. If not, they are only able to play in dry areas such as the blacktop. When in doubt, please over dress. Students are unable to stay inside from recess for more than three days without a doctor's note saying it is necessary. If you have any questions, please contact the office.

Our Winter Wonderland Dance will be held in the Swartz gym for Swartz students from 7:00 - 8:30pm Friday (12/16) night. A flyer went home with your son/daughter about the event. We all hope to see you there.
